A letter from Chris Hayes

What Do Publishers Mean By "Emergent"?
by Jana Riess, Religion BookLine -- Publishers Weekly, 3/12/2008
I got another one of those press releases today, the kind that hypes a book submission as fresh, edgy and pioneering. Nothing unusual there. Only nowadays, Christian publishers are latching on to a new term for such books, whether or not they deserve it: "Emergent."

Mountainside farmers turn to technology for water
By Mahjabeen Chowdhury
Asia Pacific Program Coordinator with The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund.
Farmers need water. It is a basic need, not only to water their crops but also to drink and to cook. It is a long, steep climb from the rivers and streams in the valley up the mountain slopes in the Cordillera region in The Philippines where poor, indigenous farmers try to eke out a living.

"Sound personal money management is essential to living the life of the Christian steward. For most people, this is where the pedal hits the metal. As stewardship ministers in our parishes we have an opportunity to hold out an ideal for parishioners. The key is to do it with integrity –– owning up to our own experience, while articulating our hopes, wishes and dreams for stewarding our personal finantial futures. "

A woman went into her kitchen to find a burglar loaded down with her small appliances. She didn't have a weapon so she raised her hand, said "Acts 2:38," and proceeded to quote scripture.
The burglar froze in place, the woman called 911 and the police arrived amazed to find the burglar still frozen where he stood.
"What did you say to him that kept him from moving?" they asked the woman.
She told them that she had simply said Acts 2:38 and quoted scripture.
The police chuckled and escorted the burglar out to the patrol car. "Why did the woman's quoting scripture scare you so much?" they asked.
"Scripture?" said the burglar, "I thought she said she had an ax and two 38's!"
