NEWS OF THE WIDER CHURCH

When churches lose their way
Times Colonist (Victoria, BC)
April 8

There is something terribly sad about the fighting between the Anglican Church and parishes that wish to break away over the issue of same-sex unions. The fact that people of a shared faith, facing a world with so many physical and spiritual challenges, are wasting time, energy and money in the courts sparks both despair and anger.

Citing financial difficulties, the Anglican Sisters of St. John the Divine (SSJD) and the diocese of Montreal have jointly agreed that the Sisters would withdraw from St. John’s House/Maison St-Jean Montréal at St. Lambert, Que., when the lease expires this June, and move back to the SSJD convent in Toronto.

Bishop Henry Hill was a man passionate about dialogue between Anglican and Orthodox churches. So passionate, in fact, that the former Diocese of Ontario bishop not only served as the Archbishop of Canterbury's representative in related dialogues, but in 1991 he set up the St. Basil Scholarship so scholars from Oriental Orthodox churches could travel overseas to learn more about each other's faith.

An issue! An issue! We all fall down

Those who would divide the Communion lack an Anglican spirit, says Mark Oakley

The Rev. Rod Thomas wrote to this newspaper that “there are only really two sides to the current controversy over human sexuality . . . there is no room for middle ground” (Letters, 14 March). So far, media commentators have interpreted the division in the Anglican Communion in the same vein — as being between “conservatives” and “liberals”.

HEAVENLY HUMOUR

A little technology theology

“One day God looked down at Earth and saw a lot of rascally behaviour,” says the first geek. “So he sent an angel down for a time. When the angel returned she said to God, “yes, it really is bad on Earth. 95 per cent of the people are misbehaving and only five per cent are not.”

“What happened then? Asked the second geek.

“Well, God considered the situation and decided to send a second angel for a second opinion. That angel returned with the same message, 96 per cent of the people were misbehaving regularly.”

“So what is God going to do about it?”

“Well, obviously God was not pleased, so he e-mailed the 5 per cent who were behaving themselves in order to encourage them. Do you know what the e-mail said?” said the first geek.

“Gee, I don’t know,” said the second.

“Oh oh, we're in trouble," said the first geek. “I didn't get one either.”
