Heroic efforts transform rectory
by Marian Lucas Jefferies
The rectory in Upham (aka The Parsonage), is a grand and elegant home once again, thanks to the faith, skills and determination of the people of this wonderful parish and community. In thanksgiving for the ministry of the saw and hammer, we gathered there on Sunday afternoon, April 6, to bless this stately white home that has watched over the community for 162 years. It was also an open house occasion, with lots of food, fun and fellowship.

Parish raises funds to donate solar ovens
This lent, All Saints Anglican Church (Delta, B.C.) council approved a special lenten project in association with this year's PWRDF theme of "Enough for All; Care of Creation." PWRDF partner, the Diocese of Masasi in southern Tanzania, was encouraging the use of solar ovens for cooking. These have many advantages for the good of the environment as well as for the women who do the cooking for their families. This model of oven is really a hot box. The food goes into the box and cooks slowly in the sun, much like a slow cooker/crock pot. Bread cooks in three hours and meat takes four. Cooking this way means trees are not cut down for charcoal or fuel and continue to give shade, soil erosion is avoided, women and children do not breathe in smoke, less time is spent looking for fuel, and the oven is safe to leave, enabling women to spend more time on other work such as child care or education. PWRDF helps with the education and mobilization of this project. Each oven costs approximately $25, which is more than most rural families can afford. The diocese hopes in the future to be able to subsidize the cost of the ovens by 50 per cent. Some families are buying one to share. Glen Spurrell, the PWRDF African program officer, explains that the ovens are not given away because "our partners believe in the need to instil a sense of self-sufficiency" within the population. All Saints set their target high with the hope that, at the end of Lent, they could send $1,000 to PWRDF in support of this Diocese of Masasi project. They raised more than $1,850, nearly twice their target. It is a win/win project: for the environment; for families in Tanzania and for members of All Saints as they have the opportunity to walk with partners far away.

Communiqué from the Faith, Worship, and Ministry committee meeting
****************************************The Story Lectionary provides a useful preaching and religious formation tool, based on the power and vitality of biblical stories, songs and sagas. It is especially useful to leaders of small congregations with limited resources.
*****************************
"The (creation) story tells us that each and every one of us is a steward. God has entrusted the care of everything there is to us. And when we embrace this role, when we live it out, we are in essence working in partnership with God, doing our part in helping to make God's dream a reality. For me, this means that preaching can be seen as the act of speaking God's dream as revealed in the words of scripture, and holding various aspects of that dream up for examination as we bring it alongside various situations in our contemporary world and our own lives. Preaching can become a kind of dialogue between these two resource materials –– God's dream and our situation. "

A little boy really wanted $100, he prayed for it in vain for several weeks. Eventually he decided a letter to God might get more attention, so he wrote to God requesting the $100. Uncertain of a proper mailing address and postal code for God, the postal authorities forwarded the letter to the prime minister. The prime minister was amused and instructed his secretary to send the boy a five-dollar bill, which he thought would seem like a lot of money to a small boy.
The boy was indeed delighted with the $5 and wrote a thank-you note to God, which read: Dear God, Thank you very much for sending the money. Sadly it got sent to Ottawa first and the government deducted $95 in taxes.
