The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund has been an
important part of the life of this diocese since its beginnings in the late fifties,
following the Canada-wide response to the tragedy of the Springhill mining disaster. As a
matter of fact, the Diocese of Fredericton was the first recipient of relief after the
fund was established in 1959. The Escuminac fishing disaster left many fatherless families
in northeastern New Brunswick, and the Anglican Church of Canada was there, prepared to
extend a helping hand in Christian love.
PWRDF operates today with a national staff of twenty
people consisting of the director, international coordinators for all parts of the world,
diocesan liaisons and other support staff, and in every diocese of the country through
diocesan coordinators working to support a network of parish representatives.

On being a Parish PWRDF representative

Our Diocesan PWRDF Coordinator :
On July 1, 2004, Bishop Miller announced the appointment of Betty McNamara to the position of Diocesan PWRDF coordinator. McNamara brings her experience of parish representative, and member of the Diocesan PWRDF committee to the position.
McNamara has a desire to have PWRDF known throughout the diocese. " We are all Anglicans together in this diocese and I want to tell the PWRDF story. It is a good news story for the church; it involves making a difference in the everyday lives of people around the world."
The role of the coordinator is to be a liaison between the PWRDF National office and the bishop, clergy, and people of the Diocese of Fredericton, and to assist the parish representatives.
The parish representatives in over 900 parishes across Canada are the backbone of PWRDF partnership."The parish reps need to understand the importance of their role and how crucial their input is to the overall working of PWRDF." The clergy also play a part in encouraging the work of PWRDF, as the parishioners look to them for direction.
A workshop will be planned for the parish reps of the Diocese of Fredericton so they may meet one another, learn what is happening across the diocese, and across the country.
The Vision Statement of PWRDF states that we must strive for:
Communities fully restored to right relations based on God's call for peace, justice, and the dignity of every human being.
"It is my faith commitment to strive for this. I believe so passionately that we must all work toward this end. A faith filled life means people help others. In Rick Warren's book, The Purpose Driven Life, I read this :You can give without loving but you cannot love without giving."
The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund has been incorporated as a
registered charitable organization connected to the Anglican Church of Canada, as
"a
response by Canadian Anglicans ... to bear witness to God's healing love in a broken
world".
Through incorporation, PWRDF is now legally independent of the church's national
office, and can now guarantee the intent of all contributions. In the Diocese of
Fredericton, the Primate's Fund continues to be a well-respected and essential part of
diocesan life.
PWRDF works in close cooperation with the Canadian International Development Agency, or
CIDA. Recently CIDA unveiled its policy paper, 'Strengthening Aid Effectiveness',
outlining its vision of the future of this important work. They launched a series of
public sessions to hear the impressions of these policies from Canadians across the
country . Although the national PWRDF made a presentation on behalf of the Canadian
church, our diocese felt that we wanted to make our views known, and we made a
presentation to CIDA when it visited Fredericton. You can read our response here.
